With Game of Thrones being over, and new platforms like Disney Plus being out, you might be asking yourself, is HBO Now worth it in 2020, or should you perhaps shift your budget towards a different series?
In 2019, when we first wrote a post as to whether HBO Now is worth it, we were saying that you should do it for Game of Thrones. We were talking about how the last season took 2 years to complete...
...And then it was all over.
Now it’s just a great show that most “don’t live with anymore.”
For a long time, HBO Now was the most expensive and popular show out there. And that dramatically built the popularity of HBO...
But now that it’s over, what now?
You can re-watch Game Of Thrones, but what after that?
There are a few shows in the universe of GOT coming out, but that’s not for a year or two.
What until then?
Let’s make it clear.
As far as quantity, HBO does not compete with Netflix.
...One thing that HBO does beat Netflix at is quality of productions, though.
It’s not that Netflix doesn’t have incredible quality shows, but that it’s not consistent throughout with its content.
That’s not the case with HBO, which focuses on perhaps less, but on a top-notch production level.
Perhaps it’s great to compare it to photographers. Any photographer can take a great picture once in a while, but a great one focuses on less, but on better. And if you were, to sum up, is HBO Now still worth it in 2020, that’s how you would sum it up.
Chernobyl released in 2019 is a great example of that! And of course, there’s also a ton of other older productions such as The Wire or Six Feet Under, Deadwood, and The Pacific.
With that said on HBO, you still get a collection of over 2,000 movies and over 100 original series, with some content not made by HBO on the platform too.
HBO Now is more expensive than Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Plus, but it is much cheaper than a TV subscription.
HBO, however, doesn’t allow for offline streaming, unlike Netflix.
Is HBO Now still worth it in 2020 from that perspective?
That depends on your budget and on whether your children will also watch.
But what if in 2020, you replaced your TV subscription with HBO Now, Hulu, DAZN, Disney Plus, and Netflix? You would save money while getting the content you actually want to watch.
Is HBO Now still worth it depends on whether you can even watch it in the first place.
...And unfortunately, even in 2020, HBO Now is limited to a few regions such as the US.
There is, however, a way to unblock HBO Now with the help of PrivateVPN, by connecting to the right server to making HBO think you are in the US and with the help of our guide on HBO.
VPN services are used to unblock blocked services all over the world, and work by changing your location to be somewhere else virtually. Of course, for some people, that might be a turn-off.
Willing to try HBO even with this issue? PrivateVPN offers a 7-day trial that doesn’t even ask for a card, so you can try it out without feeling any pressure.
If you are looking for a platform that can satisfy the entire household, you should probably check out Netflix, but if you are looking for quality productions, this is where HBO Now comes in as a must-have platform.

Disclaimer: While PrivateVPN supports HBO and has done for years, due to the nature of platforms like HBO constantly making efforts against VPN services, like any other VPN service, it’s not able to guarantee that it will work with HBO Now, non-stop, 100% of the time.
